What Are Feather Hair Extensions?

Feather hair extensions are real feathers attached to a small section of hair. Feather My Head uses slender rooster feathers sourced in the USA, with natural patterns and hand-dyed color options.

They are lightweight, reusable and heat-safe. Install them beneath your upper hair layers so they can peek through and follow your waves, curls or straight style.

Choose Your Colors and Feather Quantity

• For a soft look: Try brown, cream and natural grizzly patterns close to your hair color.
• For a little color: Add a favorite purple, blue, green or pink accent.
• For a ready-made mix: Explore designer feather sets and rainbow hair feathers. Check each listing’s product photos for the actual colors and patterns.
• For your own combination: Choose individual feather colors and build a mix.

A single-feather listing is for one feather. Designer bundles offer the quantities listed in their options, commonly 6 or 16 feathers. Adding DIY supplies does not change the number of feathers in your selected listing.

How to Choose Your Feather Length

Measure from where you plan to attach the feathers to where you want their tips to end. Hair texture, layers and your attachment point all affect the finished look. Waves and curls can make the feathers appear shorter.

Use these ranges as a starting point, then measure from your intended attachment point:

• 10–12 inches: A natural choice for above-shoulder hairstyles and shorter layers.
• 12–14 inches: A popular everyday length for shoulder-length hair.
• 14–16 inches: A longer accent for hair that falls below the shoulders.
• 16+ inches: Extra-long feathers for long hair, available in limited selected dyed colors and mixes.

Not every color or pattern comes in every length. Natural feathers are not offered in 16+, and rainbow tie-dye feathers are offered in 10–12, 12–14 and 14–16 inches. Check each product listing for current availability.

How Are Feather Hair Extensions Installed?

A small section of hair and the feather tip are secured together in a silicone-lined micro bead. A loop tool helps thread the hair through the bead, and suitable jewelry pliers are used to close it. This bead method uses no bonding glue.

Our standard DIY supplies include silicone-lined micro beads, a pink loop tool and printed instructions. Pliers are not included. Check your chosen listing for the feathers and supplies included with your purchase.

Follow the step-by-step installation tutorial, or ask a stylist to help. For removing or repositioning feathers, open the bead carefully rather than pulling on the hair or feather.

How Long Do They Last—and Can You Wash and Curl Them?

With proper installation and care, our feather extensions typically last approximately four to six months. Wear time varies, and the attachment may need repositioning as your hair grows. Carefully removed feathers can often be reused.

You can wash, blow-dry, curl and straighten real rooster feather hair extensions with your hair. Follow the care instructions supplied with your order.

• Brush gently around the attachment and avoid tugging.
• Keep feathers clear of anything that could snag them.
• Handle the feathers gently during washing and styling.
• Follow the supplied heat-styling guidance.
